Leaf Sensors Detect Water Stress

Leaf Sensors Detect Water Stress
Nov-11-17
Sensors applied to plant leaves could notify farmers when their crops need more water.

Developed by a team from MIT, the sensors are made up of a conductive ink that can be applied directly to the leaf, over the tiny pores called stomata. As the stomata respond to light, the sensors detect the speed at which the pores fully open or close, which indicates the plant’s current water stress.

The MIT team hopes to eventually create a sticker that could be applied to the leaves in the field.
