Leech Robot Climbs Walls

May-12-19 The nature-inspired LEeCH robot can climb walls and other vertical surfaces by elongating its body like a leech.

The LEeCH (Longitudinally Extensible Continuum-robot inspired by Hirudinea) was inspired by the common leech and a runaway shower hose. Made up of three flexible tubes with a suction cup on either end, the LEeCH is powered by vacuum pumps and soft actuators. In tests, the soft bot was able to climb walls as well as transition to horizontal surfaces—a first for soft robots.
