Lego Brick Device Detects Nerve Gas

Lego Brick Device Detects Nerve Gas
Jun-28-18
Researchers have created a nerve gas detector powered by a smartphone and made of Lego bricks.

Lego bricks have long outgrown the toybox, and have been used to create a variety of sophisticated devices. Joining these ranks is the inexpensive chemical weapon detector from researchers at the University of Texas and Xi’an Jiaotong University, made up of a Lego box equipped with a UV lamp and 96-well test plate, and powered by a standard smartphone. The gases are identified via a new methodology that detects the optical signal generated by the decomposition of the chemicals, which is enhanced by fluorescence to create colors and brightness levels that can be read by first responders.

The Lego structure is both simple and durable, and can be assembled on the spot, making it very useful in identifying dangerous gases in the field.
