LESA Helps Astronauts Rescue Fallen Crewmembers

The Lunar Evacuation System Assembly would allow a single astronaut to lift and transport a fallen crewmember back to the station.

In development by NASA and ESA, the LESA device can be transported near the fallen astronaut 'like a golf caddy,' where its lift mechanism and stretcher can then be used by a single operator to load and carry the individual back to the pressurized lander. According to Hervé Stevenin, ESA head of spacewalk training, the LESA is a vital part of extended extraplanetary missions because “There is no way an astronaut could carry their fallen crewmate over their shoulder while wearing an EVA suit.”
