Levitating Water to Detect Contaminants

Levitating Water to Detect Contaminants
May-07-18
An innovative method of testing for water contamination relies on using ultrasonic levitation to detect harmful metals.

Typically, detecting heavy metals dissolved in water requires sending the sample to a lab for analysis. In an attempt to simplify the process, a team of researchers from the Instituto de Ciencias Físicas levitated a water droplet using ultrasound, which causes the water to evaporate and increases the density of the contaminants. The sample can then be subjected to laser induced breakdown spectroscopy more effectively, allowing even very low levels of contaminants to be detected.
