Light Cocoon Car Made with Bionic Fabric

Light Cocoon Car Made with Bionic Fabric
Jan-03-15
The Light Cocoon, a 3D-printed sports car with a body made of "bionic fabric," was developed with an eye toward creating an efficient vehicle while using as little materials as possible.

The Light Cocoon was created by EDAG Engineering in partnership with the outdoor clothing company Jack Wolfskin, who supplied the fabric coating. Inspired by the way a leaf stretches its thin material over a skeletal structure, The Light Cocoon's steel frame is covered with the strong, weatherproof stretch fabric called Texapore Softshell. Weighing four times less than standard copier paper, the material protects the car's occupants from the wind and weather while still adding very little weight to the vehicle.

The Light Cocoon also offers a preview at the possible future of cars, where 3D-printing and extremely lightweight vehicles could become the norm.
