Light-powered RFID sensors could give help connect the impending Internet of Things with no need for outside power sources.
As the IoT grows larger, the multitude of devices will need an efficient way to communicate. To that end, the team from MIT created light-powered RFID tags that can generate energy from sources as low as dim indoor lighting. In contrast to previous bulky and expensive solar technology, the perovskite cell-based structure used by the team is transparent and flexible, and can be embedded into RFID tags to power an array of sensors.
In tests, the light-powered RFID sensors transmitted temperature information continuously and five times farther than current RFID tags.
