A lightweight and affordable cough assist device could have applications in rural and impoverished areas.
Cough assist devices are used to help patients with cystic fibrosis and other conditions that tend to have extreme difficulty coughing—which can be both uncomfortable as well as cause lung and heart complications. However, these devices are heavy, expensive and require electricity.
To offer an affordable and more portable device option, a student team from Grand Valley State University worked with a group at Beaumont Health to create a lightweight, plastic and vinyl cough assist device that can be operated manually. The device has been licensed for manufacturing, and could bring much-needed relief to patients in remote and impoverished regions.
