A light-activated itch relief medication could offer extended relief for patients suffering from chronic itchiness.
Developed by a team from EMBL Rome, the medication is made up of a chemical that is injected into the skin, where it binds to nerve cells that produce the itching sensation. Once in place, the chemical is subjected to near-infrared light, which causes the cells to withdraw from the surface of the skin.
