Low-Power Chip Opens Door to Voice Control

Low-Power Chip Opens Door to Voice Control
Feb-15-17
A low-power, voice recognition chip could lead to a new generation of wearable and mobile devices.

As voice recognition technology grows more sophisticated, it is poised to replace gestures as the way to interact with devices. To help usher in voice-controlled electronics, the team from MIT have created a low-power chip that could replace speech recognition software—significantly cutting power usage at the same time. The new chip saves power by using a “voice activity detection” circuit that will trigger the system to switch on only when it detects speech.

According to the team, the chip could have applications in power-constrained devices, such as wearables and off-grid devices.
