Magnamosis Heals Intestines with Magnets

Magnamosis Heals Intestines with Magnets
Aug-26-17
The Magnamosis system connects intestines via magnets, offering an alternative to sutures and staples.

Developed by Dr. Michael Harrison of the University of California San Francisco, the Magnamosis treatment is intended for patients undergoing procedures such as intestinal bypasses or resections. The method involves a pair of circular magnets—one concave and one convex—that are contained in a medical-grade shell. Once implanted in the area being reconnected, the magnets will pull together with the tissue between them. That tissue, which is cut off from blood flow, will die off, forming a hole that releases the magnets after it heals and allows the magnets to then pass naturally from the body.
