Tiny biodegradable beads infused with iron nanoparticles could help save coral reefs.
One of the main contributors to the destruction of coral reefs is oxybenzone, a chemical commonly found in sunscreen. To help reduce the amount of oxybenzone build-up in the ocean, a team from the University of Puerto Rico developed tiny, biodegradable beads made of algae and chitosan. The beads can be deposited in areas popular with swimmers and snorkelers, where they will absorb the oxybenzone and then be removed from the water using a magnet.
