An injectable magnetic liquid and pair of magnets staunch bleeding to extend the survival time of trauma victims.
The system developed by the team from MIT relies on a pair of strong magnets that are attached to the skin on either side of the wound. The magnetic liquid is then injected upstream from the injury, whereupon it will flow between the external magnets and slow or even stop, staunching blood loss temporarily for safer patient transport.
According to team lead Yonatan Tekleab, "Our hope is to extend patients' survival time by at least 30 minutes by conserving blood, so that they are in a more stable condition upon arrival at a trauma center.”
