Magnetic nanobots that can be controlled inside of live cells could open the door to new diagnosis and treatment methods.
The nanobots were created by the team from the University of Toronto, who had previously developed bots able to manipulate cells from the outside using lasers. To take the technology a step further, the new bots (essentially an iron bead only 700nm wide) can be controlled magnetically, which allows them to make more precise movements without damaging the cells. The team believes the technology could lead to new ways of studying cells as well as diagnosing and treating different diseases.
