Magnetic Nanoparticles Remove Oil from Water

Magnetic Nanoparticles Remove Oil from Water
Aug-19-18
Researchers have developed a magnetic nanoscale solution able to extract the last bits of oil from water.

Oil production, particularly fracking, is a water-intensive process—and the oil and water will mix to form stable in-water emulsions in ‘produced water’ that are difficult to remove. To reclaim more of this water, the team from Rice University created a magnetic particle solution made up of positively-charged amines added to magnetic iron nanoparticles. The positively-charged particles bind to the oil, allowing them both to be removed from the water with magnets that can then be washed and reused.
