A magnetic surgical cement able to also offer targeted drug delivery could significantly aid in the treatment of cancer.
Developed by a team from the University of Illinois, the cement has been embedded with magnetic particles that can be guided to the fractures, where they can also deliver therapeutic drugs. In tests, the researchers were able to steer to the nanoparticles to a desired location in the spine, offering an in vivo proof-of-concept of a new way to treat the causes of spinal fractures while also providing structural support.
