Magnetically Controlled Soft Robots

Magnetically Controlled Soft Robots
Mar-31-17
A new method of controlling robots with magnetic fields could lead to the next generation of soft robots.

The technology, being developed by a team at North Carolina State University, involves embedding polymer sheets with microscopic iron particles. When the sheets were exposed to a magnetic field, the particles self-arranged into chains, which altered the shape of the material.

In tests, the magnetically controlled devices were able to lift up to fifty times their weight.
