The at-home CRISPR kit from Mammoth Biosciences could one day let people diagnose diseases at home, in the hospital or in the field.
Still in the prototype phase, the paper-based test is about the size of a credit card, and takes advantage of bacteria’s ability to edit DNA. In the case of the test being developed at Mammoth Biosciences, CRISPR is paired with the enzymes Cas12a and Cas13a, which can detect specified RNA or DNA and trigger a fluorescent signal or color change. That signal would be read by a smartphone app, allowing users to diagnose a range of diseases quickly and affordably.
