Manganese Sand Cleans Stormwater

Manganese Sand Cleans Stormwater
Sep-01-18
An engineered sand able to remove contaminants from stormwater could offer a new source of drinking water.

A team from UC Berkeley created the sand by mixing common sand with two types of manganese, which react with each other to form manganese oxide. When water containing organic pollutants flows through the sand, the pollutants bind with the manganese oxide and are either broken down to less-toxic pieces or removed entirely.

The team hopes that the sand could be used to filter stormwater before it flows into underwater aquifers to help purify the water for consumption.
