An extremely strong armor material made of composite metal foams will cause a bullet to disintegrate on contact.
Developed by a team from North Carolina University, the foam consists in part of composite metal foams (CMFs) that have been investigated by Professor Afsaneh Rabiei for some time. In tests, a layer of foam less than an inch thick was able to stop a bullet while making only an 8mm indentation in the back (NIJ standards allow up to 44mm).
The team believes the heat- and radiation-blocking abilities of the material could also allow it to be used for applications from spacecraft to shipping nuclear waste.
