The airless Uptis tire eliminates the risk of flats while also reducing resource use and wear on the vehicle.
Traditional inflated tires can be punctured or inadequately inflated—leading to blowouts and causing wear on the vehicle. As a safer and more stable alternative, Michelin and General Motors have teamed up to create the Uptis, a non-inflating replacement for both the tire and the wheel. The Uptis is an evolution of Michelin’s Tweel system, and features a structure made up of the company’s patented, resin-embedded fiberglass material.
The group hopes to roll out the Uptis tires for passenger vehicle use as soon as 2024.
