Micro-robots able to carry cells to specific sites could bring targeted drug delivery to a new level.
The micro-robots were developed by a team from the City University of Hong Kong by first running computer simulations to find the best shape for the bots. After settling on a spiky burr shape, the team 3D-printed the robots complete with a pouch to carry their cargo of stem cells and connective tissue. The micro-robots were coated with nickel and titanium, allowing the team to move them to the target location with a magnet, where the cells were then released.
