Microneedle Patch Releases Insulin as Needed

Microneedle Patch Releases Insulin as Needed
Jan-21-17
A skin patch able to automatically dispense insulin as needed could drastically change the lives of patients with diabetes.

The patch is equipped with an array of hollow, glucose-sensitive microneedles each loaded with an insulin dose. When the needles make contact with a high concentration of glucose, they will degrade and release their drug cargo automatically. In tests on diabetic mice with spikes in blood sugar levels, the patch was able to bring their levels down to normal within two hours.
