A new smartpatch able to deliver blood thinners on demand could help to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
Developed by teams from two North Carolina universities, the microneedle patch is able to monitor the amount of thrombin, which initiates clotting, in the blood and then release the blood thinner heparin in the correct dose. The amount of heparin released can be varied based on the patient’s needs.
In tests, the micropatch proved more efficient at helping mitigate thrombosis than the conventional method of injection.
