Mine Kafon is a Wind-Powered Minesweeper

Mine Kafon is a Wind-Powered Minesweeper
Nov-02-12
A minesweeper inspired by childhood toys uses the power of the wind to roll along the ground and seek out unexploded landmines.

As a boy, Massoud Hassani and his friends race against small rolling objects as they were pushed by the constant mountain winds. Often, the toys would roll into inaccessible mine-laden areas. Inspired by these toys venturing into areas too dangerous for humans, Hassani created the Mine Kafon, a large sphere made of lightweight bamboo and biodegradable plastics with an integrated GPS chip. As the device is blown along the ground it sends information to the web about its route, indicating where it has traveled, how many mines were destroyed in a particular area and the location of the safest walking paths.

Although the Mine Kafon will follow a rather random, wind-blown route, scattering several of them over an area is a low-cost and safe way to continue to seek out the more than 10 million mines still buried in Afghanistan.
