Mini Chemical Factories Create Drugs Inside the Body

Mini Chemical Factories Create Drugs Inside the Body
Jun-02-18
Tiny chemical factories implanted inside the body could open the door to on-demand drugs for targeted therapy.

Developed by a team from the Imperial College London, the mini chemical reactors rely on a series of vesicles created by the team that break their membranes and release their chemicals when exposed to light. The vesicles were then placed within a vesicle that does not respond to light. The result is a small contained environment that can be triggered externally to produce drugs within the body, and, according to Professor Oscar Ces, “… are a crucial step in making responsive artificial cells programmed to carry out certain reactions on cue.”
