A miniature ultrasound device from the startup Microsonix could help bring better health care to rural and impoverished areas.
The tiny device is about the size of a pen, and can be mass produced for a low cost. Eventually, the team hopes to bring the technology down to the size of a chip, which could be swallowed to image the digestive track. In the meantime, the smaller, affordable device should help bring needed ultrasound technology into developing countries that currently use second-hand machines—or none at all.
