A new modular paving system made of recycled plastic harvests energy from the sun.
While not the first pavement system designed to harvest solar energy, the Platio differs in that it is geared towards sidewalks, rather than roadways. The modules, which come in three different colors, feature monocrystalline silicon cells embedded in tempered glass, and connect to make electronic contact with no extra wires needed.
The system can generate 160 watts per square feet, and the team is also working to develop a version able to harvest the energy from pedestrian traffic.
