A new desalination technology will extract lithium for use as it purifies seawater for drinking.
Developed by an international team, the technology replaces the commonly used reverse osmosis membranes with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which have an intricate internal structure. Rather than relying on high pressure to force water molecules through specific pores, the MOF membrane will dehydrate particular ions, saving energy. As a bonus, the material will also capture lithium ions, which can be harvested for use in batteries.
