A new 3D-printed biomimetic skin offers realistic, human-skin pigmentation.
While 3D-printed skin holds great promise for skin grafts and toxicology testing, the material lacks realistic pigmentation or hair follicles.
A new technology from A*STAR’s Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) and the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP) addresses that issue, however, by using three types of skin cells—keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts—in a two-step bioprinting method. The ‘drop on demand’ procedure allows the printed cells to be distributed very precisely, creating a more realistic color and texture.
