A more realistic artificial heart ventricle from Harvard could aid in the study of disease and treatment development.
Researchers have been searching for a testing alternative to animals and humans, and developing realistic testing models is key to that move. To that end, the team from Harvard created a heart model by spinning nanofibers to form a cone shape—with all the fibers aligned in the same direction—and the seeding the scaffold with heart stem cells. The ‘heart’ reacted to stimuli in the same way as a real heart, and could lead to bespoke models made from the patient’s own stem cells that could provide a more intimate portrait of disease progression and treatment options.
