Mouthguard Detects Fatigue Through Saliva

Mouthguard Detects Fatigue Through Saliva
Aug-10-18
A smart mouthguard able to detect athlete fatigue in real time via saliva samples provides an alternative to blood tests.

Developed by PARC and the University of California San Diego with funding from NextFlex, the electronic plastic foil sensor can fit into a standard mouthguard, where it analyzes the glucose and lactate found in sweat. The data, which can indicate fatigue levels, is sent to a paired smartphone in real-time. The prototype device fared well in lab tests, and the team now plans to test it in sports such as boxing and football.
