A new drone from the University of Michigan can nail shingles to a rooftop, deciding in flight where to target the nails.
The drone, a variation of a previous version able to operate a flame-thrower, consists of a DJI S1000 Octocopter equipped with a standard nail gun. With the help of a system of cameras and markers, the drone maneuvered over a model rooftop and affixed asphalt shingles to a range of slope examples. The team admits that though the drone is currently less effective than a human roofer, the system could be improved by a power tether color-coded shingles.
