Nanobots able to destroy nerve agents could be used to create protective clothing that stops the attack and release an antidote.
Developed by a team from Pennsylvania State University, the nanobots are based on a sort of submarine design that allows them to propel themselves as they pull in and push out fluid. However, attaching the nanobots to a surface, such as fabric, prevents them from moving and causes them to function as pumps, pulling in the dangerous chemical for destruction while automatically releasing an antidote.
The team’s current nerve gas-fighting nanobot is powered by a reaction between the nerve agent and an enzyme triggered by the agent, which allows the system to be self-powered and function only when needed.
