An innovative new battery design relies on a nanochain structure and an advanced electrode material to increase both performance and safety.
The new design overcomes the difficulties associated with using antimony in batteries—a promising metalloid that increases the charging capacity of lithium-ion batteries but also causes the electrode component to expand up to three times. The team from Purdue University addressed the issue by using a reducing agent to join tiny particles of the antimony into a nanochain that can expand without failing. According to the team, the nanochain structure stabilizes the lithium-ion capacity for at least 100 charging-discharging cycles, and the design can be scaled up to larger batteries.
