Nanofiber Sensor Detects Bad Breath

Nanofiber Sensor Detects Bad Breath
Jun-11-18
A simple, sensitive sensor able to detect bad breath could also help identify health problems.

Developed by teams from KAIST and MIT, the sensor detects halitosis via the chemical lead (II) acetate that has been anchored in a nanofiber web. This web creates numerous sites for hydrogen sulfide gas (the key component in bad breath) to interact with the lead (II) acetate. The new arrangement allows the sensor to detect the gas in concentrations as low as 400 parts per billion, triggering the device to turn from white to brown in just a minute. As well as sparing social embarrassment, the sensor could also help identify potentially serious medical and dental problems.
