A nanogel that kills lingering cancer cells after surgery could help reduce the chances of the tumor growing back.
Removing cancer tumors surgically can sometimes leave some cancer cells behind, which can cause the tumor to grow back. To help ensure a more complete recovery, a team led by a group from UCLA created a hydrogel containing calcium carbonate nanoparticles filled with antibodies that inhibit the CD47 protein. Since cancer cells can sometimes over-express CD47 to hid from the immune system, the application of the gel can help the immune system locate and destroy the remaining cancer cells.
