Injectable magnetic nanoparticles could help stop internal bleeding without surgery.
Developed by a team from ITMO University, the nanoparticles are made up of thrombin wrapped in a matrix of magnetite. When injected into a model bloodstream, the nanoparticles were directed magnetically to the site of the vascular injury, where an additional injection of fibrinogen triggered a clot to form 6.5 times faster than it normally would have.
The team now hopes to move into animal trials in preparation for eventual human use.
