Nanopore Sensor Detects the Flu with AI

Nanopore Sensor Detects the Flu with AI
Dec-03-18
An AI-powered nanopore sensor able to detect the influenza virus could help prevent future outbreaks.

Developed by a team from Osaka University, the nanopore sensor relies on electroosmotic flow—using an electric current to cause liquid to flow across a nanopore—to block the passage of non-virus particles. By allowing only viruses to enter the sensor, the device is able to achieve high sensitivity even when testing complex biological fluids.

According to study researcher Akihide Arima, “Importantly, use of this sensor does not require specialized human expertise, so it can readily be applied as a point-of-care screening approach by a wide variety of healthcare personnel.”
