Nanoscale Refrigerator Cools Quantum Computers

Nanoscale Refrigerator Cools Quantum Computers
May-14-17
A nanoscale refrigerator from Aalto University could help keep quantum computers cool.

The quantum computing system, though extremely powerful, is also very different than normal computers, relying on chains of qubits to store information and a delicate balance of external conditions to keep the system operating efficiently.

The nanoscale refrigerator could help qubits keep their cool using a process called quantum tunneling, which allows electrons to pass through a barrier—in this case, an insulator two nanometers thick. The team gave the electrons not quite enough energy to pass through the barrier, which triggered the electrons to draw the missing energy from the quantum device, harnessing its heat and cooling it down.
