Researchers have developed a nanotechnology that offers an improvement over conventional bionic eyes.
Developed by teams from the University of California San Diego and Nanovision Biosciences Inc., the nano-system is made up of a group of nanowires able to function in the same way as the retina’s natural photoreceptor cells. The system is designed to be implanted directly on the retina, where the nanowires will detect the incoming light and then generate an electric current that directly stimulates the retinal cells—providing a higher resolution image without the need for an external sensor.
