The Shapeshifter drone from NASA can separate into two different units to explore various habitats.
The prototype drone is made up of several smaller, quadcopter drones called cobots, which can fly independently. For a closer look at the ground, the cobots can come together to form a rolling, wheel-like drone that would travel along the surface. Eventually, the team envisions groups of cobots working together to traverse all sorts of terrain, from caves to underwater environments—making them ideal for exploring distant worlds.
