Needle Simulator Lets Doctors Practice

Needle Simulator Lets Doctors Practice
Jul-18-18
A new syringe simulator offers an effective and affordable way to train doctors on complex, needle-based procedures.

Some anesthesiology procedures, such as epidurals, are complex and require specialized training—which currently is expensive and not very effective. As a more affordable and useful alternative, the team from Penn State College created a haptic-force needle-insertion simulator able to simulate the sensation of a needle moving through several layers of tissue. The device, which is small enough to be held in the hand, can replicate the different types of tissue encountered during a specific procedure, allowing the technician to gain the steady hand required for such delicate operations.
