NeuroPace RNS System Prevents Seizures Before They Start

NeuroPace RNS System Prevents Seizures Before They Start
Nov-18-13
The recently-approved NeuroPace RNS system helps to control epilepsy by sending an electrical impulse to the seizure focus of the brain, preventing seizures before they can start.

The RNS system was created to treat medically refractory partial epilepsy in adults that have not had success with antiepileptic drugs. The device is implanted in the brain, where it detects abnormal electrical activity and responds by sending tiny levels of electrical stimulation to stop a seizure before it occurs. The system also includes a programmer that allows physicians to non-invasively control the device’s detection and stimulation levels.

In a follow-up with patients who had received the implant, the RNS System was shown to reduce seizures by 50 percent or more.
