A new type of antibiotic from the glycopeptides family works by blocking the function of the bacterial cell wall.
Tests on mice have shown that these new antibiotics can block infections caused by the drug-resistant
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.
Antibiotics like penicillin kill bacteria by preventing the building of their cell walls, but this new antibiotic works in the opposite way by preventing cell walls from being broken down, essentially trapping the bacteria so it can't expand or grow.
