New Coating Indicates Concrete Stresses

New Coating Indicates Concrete Stresses
Jul-22-17
An optical coating that indicates concrete stress offers a warning when the material is in danger of fracturing.

The coating, from a team at Leed’s University, is made up of a ‘birefringent’ epoxy that will reflect light in different ways depending upon the amount and direction of stress. A photonic camera can be used to capture the images of the stress points and where they are most pronounced, allowing engineers to better study how to prevent concrete fractures.
