New LED Array Looks Better, Saves Energy

New LED Array Looks Better, Saves Energy
Feb-12-17
The team from KIT has created a LED array for streetlights that saves money while also providing a more pleasant light.

Although more efficient than conventional HID lights, LED streetlights also have their disadvantages. Connecting the LEDs in a series will cause the whole system to fail if one diode goes out, and there is a limit to how many LEDs can be connected safely.

To help improve LED streetlight performance, the team from KIT created an interconnection method using low-power LEDs that allows the circuit to stay intact, even if single diodes fail. This new technology enables more LEDs to be installed in the array safely, with the KIT prototype holding 144 LEDs (compared to the previous safe maximum of 40). The team also points out that the smaller LEDs in their array are easier on the human eye and require less power to operate, saving money.
