New Liquid Flow Battery Concept Needs No Pumps

New Liquid Flow Battery Concept Needs No Pumps
May-27-16
An innovative new flow battery technology concept from MIT replaces the conventional pump system with an energy-saving hourglass design.

While flow batteries rely on pumps to move the liquid electrolytes, the prototype battery from MIT relies on a gravity-fed system that can be reversed simply by flipping the battery over. Their proof-of-concept version features a hybrid design that sees flowing liquid on one side and a solid sheet of lithium on the other, which allowed the team to test the design in a simpler form.

The team believes that once the technology is perfected, future batteries could have a modular design that would allow for expansion as needed.
