New Uses for Old Tires

New Uses for Old Tires
Dec-23-16
Old tires may find new uses as building material, thanks to research from scientists at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

Developed in collaboration with COMSA and GMN, the team focused on a way to use the fabric found in tires—until now the only material that could not be recycled. To give the material a new life, the team mixed the fabric fibers with glue and recycled paper, resulting in a material equal to rock and glass wool in its thermal and acoustic insulating abilities. According to the team, the technology could potentially reuse millions of tons of fibers, as well as take advantage of recycled paper pulp, which is not easily reused.
