The noise-canceling windows from the University of Singapore keep noise at bay while letting fresh air in.
Designed with an eye towards noisy urban environments, the windows rely on the same technology found in noise canceling headphones. Rather than simply block the noise, the windows feature a microphone that detects the incoming noise to create and play an inverted version of the sound wave, canceling the external noise.
Although the prototype system, replete with a grid full of microphones, speakers and processing units, is a bit unattractive, the team hopes to minimize the bulk while also lowering cost and increasing efficiency.
